We all know that IT issues can be frustrating. To help, we have compiled a list of the most common issues, as well as a few suggestions on how to fix them!

However, we also know it is not always a simple solution, which is why NPIT are here. To make the resolution as straightforward as possible, we have also included some helpful tips on what to say when contacting your IT support and services to get things fixed as quickly as possible.

First things first….When contacting your IT Support follow these 3 simple rules:

1) Make sure to provide as much information as possible.

2) Explain exactly what happened and what you were doing at the time of the problem.

3) If you have accidentally clicked on a suspicious link – be honest!

SOME COMMON IT ISSUES – AND WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Your computer shuts down for no reason.

This could be a result of overheating, so make sure to keep it dust free.

Your computer is too slow.

It is best to first see if you have too many windows open or have unnecessary programs running. You can do this by going to your Task Manager – click CONTROL ALT DELETE to view these. Also consider whether is it possible that you have picked up malware by clicking on an unsafe link.

Your computer is making a grinding noise.

The first thing to consider is whether you have backed up recently. In this case the best thing to do is to stop using the machine until it’s been diagnosed.

The internet is slow.

This is usually caused by spyware and viruses, however it can also relate to issues with your broadband provider. When reporting this to your support team, be honest about where you have visited and what links you clicked on.

The empty Blue Screen appears.

This is an error screen displayed on a Windows computer system following a system error.
In most cases this can be resolved with a reboot or restarting your computer.

You can’t log in, either to your system or to a specific online account.

Before reporting this issue, have you checked that you’re not using capital letters when entering your password? Also that your account hasn’t been suspended? If you have multiple email addresses it is worth considering if you have used the correct one.

Retrieving files you have accidentally deleted.

The first place to look is in your Recycle Bin, a file saved on your desktop. However if you have emptied your Recycle Bin, stop using that drive until the files are retrieved. It is likely that this information can be retrieved from your backup by your IT support team.

The printer won’t work.

A reason that is more common than people realise is that the printer isn’t turned on. Best to check this before your IT Support team can begin to diagnose other possible issues.

Your computer won’t recognize your USB device

The first thing to do is to try the device in another USB port, if that’s successful than the problem is with that specific port. If this does not work, test to see if the USB works on someone else’s computer. Finally check if other USB devices work on your PC.
